クジラという用語は、元はマーケットに大きい影響を及ぼす裕福なビットコイントレーダーを指していた。それが裕福な仮想通貨トレーダーを示す用語として広く使われるようになった。[1]
クジラは大量のSTEEM Powerを保有しているSteemianのことである。そのため、Steemitにおける投票力や収益などの影響は、特に新規ユーザーと比較して非常に広範囲である。概ね、クジラは高い評価を得ている（70以上）。典型的には、クジラはSteemitの一部であり、他のほとんどのユーザーより長い期間Steemに関わっている。
Steem Witnessの@abitは2017年3月に公開したSteemit記事で、クジラとクジラのようなグループは合計で800M VESTS以上、または約384K SPを持つものとして定義した。同じ記事の中で、この計算の背景となる数学を説明し結論を述べた：大きい力には大きい責任を伴う。[2]
Steemエコシステムで、Steem WhalesといwebサイトではSTEEMパワー（SP）、評価、推定価格などによってSteemianのランキングを見ることができる。2016年8月、@blueorgyは活動分析の力によってクジラからより多くのアップヴォートを得るためのツールCatch a Whaleを立ち上げた。（2017年7月時点で非アクティブ）[3]
