2013年に分散型取引所BitSharesが開設され、2014年に発足した。Dan Larimerによって作成され、非常に予測可能性が高く信頼性の高いブロック生成によって3秒の確認時間が与えられた委任プルーフ・オブ・ステークを用いている。BitSharesの最初のバージョンはビットコインと同じアイデアから作り直したもので、いくつかの技術を共有したが、取引のパフォーマンス要求を満たしていなかった。

Dan Larimerによると：「最も内側のレイヤーにおいては、BitSharesはソフトウェアです。具体的には、定義されたルールセットと公開鍵暗号方式による更新権限管理を持つ分散マルチユーザデータベースです。このレベルは、多くの人々とってあまり興味がないことですが、非常に重要です。ソフトウェアはオープンソースであり、簡単にコピーおよび変更することができ、最重要点はフリースピーチにより保護されています。つまり、ほぼすべてのデジタルデータを破壊するようなグローバルイベントがないこのレイヤーでBitSharesを止めることはほぼ不可能です。政府はかつて暗号ソフトウェアを武器として規制しようとし、輸出制限を課しました。政府はとっくにその戦いをやめており、もはやフリーソフトウェアの普及を規制や制御をしようとはしていません。BitSharesの場合は、ソフトウェアはパブリックドメインです。」[1]

2016年4月、Neil Haranによって書かれたTechCrunchの記事では、普及のためにセットアップとスイッチの手法を用いているとBitsharesを分類した。中央アプリ戦略と同様に、この手法はユーザーベースを最初に確立し、次に通貨を導入する。Bitsharesとその関連するスタートアップはこの良い例である。様々な通貨のネットワーク（SteemitとSTEEMトークンやPeerplaysとそのトークンなど）がユーザーベースと取引システムをゆっくりと構築し、Bitsharesの中央通貨を採用する予定である。これによりリソースが溜まる前にまず安定した基盤を作ることができる。[2]

2016年6月、Dan LarimerはSteemit (jp)ブログで、過去3年間BitSharesのコミュニティとともに活動し、Ethereumの自律分散型組織（DAO）と同じ原理の多くに基づく世界初のDAOを実装したと語った。資金を調達し、トークンを割り当て、トークン保有者にはコミュニティマネーの支払い方法とブロックチェーンパラメータの設定方法に関して投票する権限が与えられた。[3]

始まり

2013年6月2日、Dan LarimerはBitcoin ForumでBit-USDの最初のアイデアをBitSharesのホワイトペーパーを含めて発表した（Creating a Fiat/Bitcoin Exchange without Fiat Deposits）。それから5週間、一連の様々なフォーラムでコンセプトを守り精錬するための議論を行った。そこでCharles Hoskinsonと出会い、共にアイデアを吟味しビジネスプランを立てた。Charlesは開発資金の提供に同意した中国のLi Xiaolaiにプランを提示した。2013年7月4日のアメリカ独立記念日に、バージニア州でInvictus Innovationsが設立された。Invictusは2013年の10月のAtlanta Bitcoin ConferenceでHoskinsonとLarimerによるプレゼンテーションでBitSharesビジョンを紹介した。Keyhoteeのために、統合マルチウォレット、コミュニケーション、そしてプライバシーを守り、仮想通貨コミュニティの外でBitShares技術の知識を普及させるための自律分散型企業（DAC）インターフェースアプリケーションなどのプランが最初に紹介された。[4]

Graphene

2015年、Graphene（グラフェン）が創設され、Bitsharesは完全に書き直された。これにより1台のマシンで毎秒100,000トランザクションを達成し、分散型グローバルストレステストでは、分散型ネットワーク上で毎秒18,000トランザクションが達成された。アカウント名はBitshares（高度に階層的で動的なしきい値マルチシグ）とともに導入され、これによりアカウントをキーから分離し、組織を構造化し、他のユーザーに委任することを可能にする。

BitSharesからSteem

2016年、新しい概念上の課題を抱えたSteem (jp)が発足した。ソーシャルメディアユーザーは投票ごとに支払う必要はなく、アカウントの回復オプションなどが必要である。Steemもマイニングで無駄になったブロック報酬をブロックチェーンに投稿している人に再配分し、何千もの人々に資金の大規模な分散割り当てを通じて積極的な参加者になることを可能にしている。Steemは1月のコンセプトから、3月にブロックチェーン、7月にwebサイトの立ち上げまで行った。この時点で、SteemとBitsharesは残りの主要なブロックチェーンを合わせたものよりも多くの現実世界のトランザクションが毎日発生している。また、Steemは他のブロックチェーンよりもユーザーの女性比が高くなっている。ただし、SteemもBitsharesもアプリケーション特化のブロックチェーンである。同じブロックチェーン上で複数のアプリケーションを実行したい場合は、解決すべき重要なスケーラビリティの問題がある。[5]

BitShares Blockchain Foundation

BitShares Blockchain Foundationはオランダのデーフェンテルで登録された非営利組織である。2016年6月から稼働しており、それ以来、業界の裏側で準備を進めている。2017年、以下に述べるブロック生成事故の後、ウェブサイトが作られた：http://www.bitshares.foundation 基金の使命はBitSharesエコシステムを促進し、語り、すべてのポテンシャルを発揮するよう成長させることである。[6]2017年10月18日、BitShares Blockchain FoundationはBitSharesの分散自立型企業 (DAC)の公式な広報担当に選ばれたことを発表した。[7]

ブロック生成事故

2017年7月10日月曜日午前9時（UTC）、BitSharesネットワークでブロック生成の予定外の中断による事故が発生した。すべてのブロック生成者は、回復不能な古い状態にあるflat_indexコンテナの自動サイズ変更によるメモリ破損の影響を受けている。これは2年以上のブロックチェーン運営で初めて発生した。このネットワーク停止はBitshares 2.0にとって初めてのことであった。WitnessチームとDan Lalimerは協力して問題から復旧するためのパッチを書いた。[8] 何人かのコア開発者によるコードデバッグの後、原因が特定され、パッチが迅速にブロック生成者に配信された。その後、ブロックチェーンは復旧し新しいブロックが生成された。この事故の前に行ったブロックチェーンのすべてのトランザクションは変更されていない。[9]
